Apple has posted the first official trailer for Iron Man 2 this morning, and the fan community is buzzing with anticipation for the sequel to one of Marvel’s biggest films yet. The first Iron Man feature was a huge critical and fan success, and in my opinion, was the first superhero movie to really hit it right on the sweet spot. Not too campy, not too dark and brooding, but right in that zone where great comic book stories dwell.
This was due in large part to Robert Downey Jr’s amazing potrayal of Tony Stark, billionaire playboy turned superhero. But maybe the one who deserves more credit is the film’s director, Jon Favreau, who maintained that balance between reality and the hyper-realized world of Marvel. With these two key pieces in place for the sequel, Iron Man 2 is primed as the Fanboy Movie of 2010.
But don’t take my word for it, head over to Apple’s website and watch the trailer for yourself, then come back and read my thoughts on some of the tidbits revealed below.
Overall, this trailer does exactly what a trailer is supposed to do; it amps you up for the film, without giving away too many story details…or does it. Below are some freeze frames from the trailer, along with my speculations on what this could mean for the story. Be warned, these are only speculations on my part, but if you’re the type to shy away from spoilers, you may want to stop reading now.
First off, here’s a couple of pics of some new characters:
This is a pretty stellar cast of all-star, Academy Award nominated actors. A far cry from the cast of previous Marvel film adaptations, like Fantastic Four or X-Men.
Now on to speculations. First off, there’s this little shot of Stark’s Arc Reactor heart infecting his body in some way.
It looks like prolonged exposure to the Arc Reactor might not be such a good thing.
Next we’ve got a sequence where at first it appears that Iron Man is being chased down by some missiles, but as it plays out we see it’s several Iron Man-like suits. Possibly Warmachine?
But why would Warmachine be hunting down Iron Man? Hmm…
Especially considering they’re fighting side by side at the end of the trailer! What’s that all about?
And speaking of the last shot in the trailer, take a look at Iron Man’s armor. The arc reactor is a triangle, not a circle! Fans of the comics will recognize this as one of the key identifiers on the Extremis Armor.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the spreading infection caused by Arc Reactor pictured above. Hmm…I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…
