Penny Arcade has been around for almost 12 years! In internet time, that”s like a millenium. But what is it that makes PA such a lasting piece of internet history? Well, don”t expect me to sum it up in this review, because I can”t. Thankfully, that”s exactly what their new book, The Splendid Magic of Penny Arcade: The 11 1/2 Anniversary Edition, is all about!
The book chronicles the exploits of the series” creators, Jerry “Tycho” Holkins and Mike “Gabriel” Krahulik, and the bromance that created the original webcomic sensation. From their humble beginnings as highschool outcasts, to their semi-superstar status in the video game industry, with a few detours along the way, such as founding (a non-profit organization that helps supply hospitals with video games and toys) and PAX (their own personal video game convention), this book tells the whole story. And the best part is, most of it comes directly from the horses mouth. It serves as a sort of autobiography of the internet juggernaut that is PA.
But that”s not what you really want to know. You want to know if this is worth your 30 bucks or not. Well, there”s a simple answer to that; Yes. If you”re a fan of Penny Arcade, or anything they”ve done, if you”ve got their previous books sitting on your shelf, if you never fail to miss your Monday, Wednesday and Friday fix, then yes. Emphatically yes! Cover to cover, this book is full of what makes PA so great; the irreverent sense of humour that pulls no punches, the fantastic art (along with how it came to be that fantastic), and the personalities that keep you coming back for more each week. It”s all there, along with a great story about how two anti-social, gamer geeks turned their passion for games into an empire.
Here”s to another 11 1/2 years of bullshit, Penny Arcade!
