Star Wars is pretty much the most awesome thing ever. But you know what’s more awesome than Star Wars? Star Wars Fans! That’s right, all those scruffy-lookin’ nerfherders that just can’t get enough of that galaxy far, far away. Why are they so awesome, you ask? Well, it’s simple; because rather than just be happy with watching a movie they love, instead, they run around like crazy people creating their own Star Wars inspired stories and content!
Star Wars fan projects have been around since the first kid took their parent’s Super 8 video camera and their snowspeeder action figure and recreated some Hoth adventures on a snowy day. But since those early days of fandom, the fan created universe has spiralled into something far more powerful than a planet destroying spacestation.
All you need to do is jump on YouTube to find the latest Star Wars inspired fan film of a couple of teenagers swinging lightsabers, or a lego recreation of the films. In fact, here’s a couple for you to watch right now:
And these are just the tip of the iceberg. There are three major fan projects I’d like to inform you about: Adywan’s Star Wars Revisited, and The People vs. George Lucas.
Adywan’s Star Wars Revisited
Let’s start with the most ambitious; Adywan’s Star Wars Revisited is an attempt to rebuild the Classic Star Wars Trilogy back into what it once was, while still keeping the good parts of the Special Editions, and enhancing some of the lacklustre pieces. Rather than explain, why don’t I just show you.
Star Wars Uncut
Now here’s one you may have seen in the news lately. Star Wars Uncut is a project by Casey Pugh. Casey has had a hand in creating some of the cooler parts of the internet, including the online video site, Vimeo. Using Vimeo to it’s utmost potential, Casey decided it would be awesome if a bunch of people filmed 7 second clips from Star Wars, and pieced them all together, recreating the film from start to finish. Again, explaining it with text just doesn’t do it justice. Take a look:
The People Vs. George Lucas
Now here’s one that’s been flying under the radar. PvG is a documentary about the fan backlash created by the Prequel Trilogy. We’ve all heard it before, “Episode I raped my childhood!” Well, these guys made a movie about it. Writer/Director, Alexandre O. Philippe, takes us through both sides of the argument, giving an overall view of the current standing of Star Wars in the fandom. Here’s the trailer:
So, as you can see, there’s plenty of folks out there creating new and exciting content based on everyone’s favorite Sci-Fi Space Opera. Who knows, maybe you’ll be the next person to jump into the creator’s seat…
