Star Trek: Deep Space Nine #1

Being a huge Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fan, I was more than happy to read and review this new series, published by IDW.

Taking place on star date 48987.3 or in non-trek terms; two weeks after the season 3 finale, “The Adversary”. (Recap: A Changeling sabotages the U.S.S. Defiant as it attempts to start a war in the Alpha Quadrant.) We find Captain Ben Sisko feeling uneasy about the lack of Dominion activity since the attack on the Defiant. Meanwhile, there are a lot of unusual characters coming to the station seeking out Quark, while also tearing up the station looking for something, like as if they’re all on some giant scavenger hunt. What they’re looking for remains a mystery. The issue concludes with a fist fight on the promenade which results in Jake Sisko getting shot , ending with …to be continued.

Now, it’s only one issue, but so far the characterization is spot on. Writers Scott & David Tipton get it just right. From Odo’s no nonsense demeanor to Quark’s devious ways, its all here. And what better way to complement the good writing than with good art handled nicely by Fabio Mantovani. I felt he got the characters looks quite well while his handling of the tech seemed just as easy.

After all is said and done, I enjoyed this nice set-up issue, leading us into the adventure to come. So if you’re a die hard trek fan, I suggest you put this on your pull list and enjoy the ride. But if you’re a passive fan you might want to wait for the trade.
