X-Men Origins: Wolverine DVD Review

Wolverine

The GOOD

X-men Origins: Wolverine is a well paced movie that doesn’t really ever get boring. Unfortunately it doesn’t ever really get exciting either. One thing I did like however was that all the mutants in this movie were just that. Mutants. No superheroes or super villains. No costumes, tights or capes. They’re just good old fashioned freaks.

The BAD

Wolverine isn’t a bad film but it’s not a good one either. It’s better than X-Men: The Last Stand. But like the last X-Men film it suffers from an over saturation of characters too insignificant to matter, and a misuse of the characters that do matter. Gambit, for example, is almost wasted in a film he had no business being in the first place. I guess after trying to squeeze the Cajun into the last 3 movies, the filmmakers finally win by turning what should have been Wolverine’s origins into X-Men 4.

The UGLY

Deadpool. In every sense of the word, it’s ugly. Forgetting the bastardization of the character, the underuse of Ryan Reynolds is unforgivable. Love him or hate him, you cannot deny that Reynolds is choice casting for the role of the wise-cracking Merc With a Mouth, Wade Wilson a.k.a. Deadpool.. In an attempt to test the waters for a Deadpool solo movie the filmmakers decided to tie his back story with that of Wolverine’s, much like the comics. However, if they were going to make a faithful adaptation of the Deadpool comics to screen then they pretty much blew it before it could really happen.

DVD BONUS FEATURES:

Disc One:

-The Roots of Wolverine: A Conversation with Stan Lee and Len Wein Featurette
-Wolverine Unleashed: The Complete Origins Featurette
-Alternate “Memory Erase” Sequence
-Audio Commentary by Director Gavin Hood
-Audio Commentary by Producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter
-Deleted Scenes

Disc Two:

-Digital Copy of the movie.

The conversation with Stan Lee and Len Wein featurette is bordering on sad and pathetic, with two old men talking about a subject only one of them really knows. The Wolverine Unleashed featurette is cookie-cutter DVD bullshit. The deleted scenes would never improve this film. The commentary tracks are insightful though, and well worth a listen. The second disc is a waste like all the DVDs that come with digital copies.

Film: 2.5/5

DVD: 3/5
