DVD Vault: Night of the Creeps

If you’ve never seen Night of the Creeps, you really have no idea what you’re in for. As the title suggests, this is the kind of fare that you’d want to see in a drive through. A runaway alien experiment escapes a space ship and lands on Earth in the 50’s. However most of the movie takes place thirty years later in the 80’s when the movie was made and follows two college students trying to be popular like some titty comedy. That all changes when the alien experiment resurfaces as zombies and alien slugs! Be honest, could you really have predicted that?

The movie is directed by Fred Dekker whose name will only carry weight with fans of his next movie, “Monster Squad“. As for performances, Tom Atkins carries the movie as a haunted cop who was only a patrolman when the experiment first appeared in the fifties and now has to face the menace again. His performance is great, but pretty much all of the younger actors are over the top and amateur. David Paymer also makes a brief appearance as one of the victims and the great Dick Miller also has a small cameo. All of the effects are decent for a cheesy B-movie styled horror flick, utilizing strings and latex.

It’s most likely the combination of all the different genre elements and how much fun the movie is that makes it worth watching. For example, many of the characters are named after famous horror directors like Cronenberg or Raimi and as thawed corpses walk the streets, spewing brain eating alien slugs, you know you’re watching a brave and original eighties cult classic. The influence of this little known cult movie can even be seen in the recent flick Slither that also featured alien slugs that possess people.

This release of the DVD by Sony is everything a fan could ask for. It features multiple commentaries with the cast and the writer/director, deleted scenes, a number of featurettes and the original theatrical ending. This cut of the movie itself is an unrated director’s cut that features a much stronger ending.
