Another trilogy of old school Who, featuring Peter Davidson as the doctor hits stores this Christmas. Dubbed “the Black Guardian Trilogy“, the trinity of adventures start with the introduction of a new companion for the Doctor. Seemingly a sneaky schoolboy, this young man has an evil agenda; co-opted by the Black Guardian, he must kill the Doctor, but can he actually do it? All three stories have this underlying plot line but it never really fully materializes until the third story arc and even then, the Black Guardian isn’t as threatening as his ominous name implies. Aside from this small qualm, the stories are pretty classic “Who” and are entertaining for the most part.
Each disc has four episodes apiece and has a variety of special features including commentaries by cast and crew, deleted scenes, featurettes and isolated music tracks. The third disc is so loaded down with stuff it requires two discs to contain it all! If you’re looking for great, vintage BBC sci-fi, look no further.
